MINUTES

  5. Correspondence:
    1. Letter to Rick Heath, Tussey Mt. concerning the repeal of the "No-Band" rule during football play by the PIAA Board of Directors
    2. Letter from Joe Kimmel, Shade Principal.  Shade will begin a Junior and Senior High wrestling program fro the 2001-2002 school year.
    3. Letter from Dave Koba, Conemaugh Twp. Principal.  They exceeded the number of team competitions in Junior High Girls Soccer.  They will forfeit two games to Westmont and Somerset.
    4. Letter from Berlin High School concerning the status of the Chestnut Ridge Girls Volleyball meet of September 8.  This will be considered a Quad Tournament and matches will not count toward District 5 seedings.
  6. New Business
    1. Report from Shade High School concerning the use of electronic devices at athletic events.  Motion to adopt the following District 5 policy and be sent to all schools.  "The PIAA District 5 Committee prohibits the use of electronic radio transmitters/receivers, scanners and the like at all District 5 athletic events.  Only those with permission by the game management may have the devices on school property during the events.  Those individuals found in possession of such devices, not meeting the terms and conditions of the district policy, will be removed from school property and/or the electronic equipment be confiscated."

    3. Windber has redone their gym and there is a loss of some seating.  The committee decided to keep the District Wrestling Tournament at Windber High School.
    4. An in-service for basketball officials and coaches will be held on November 18 from 2:00 to 3:00 at Bedford High School.
    5. Reports and results were presented by sport chairmen on fall sports of Cross Country, Golf, Football, Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis and Basketball packets.
  7. Informational Items - District Chairman
    1. PIAA Board of Directors  - Executive staff time line and review and renewal.  The committee backs renewal of contracts.
    2. District 6 is experimenting with a paperless student-athletic certificate of eligibility.
    3. Block Scheduling - Whenever students spend approximately double the amount of the time in class under "block" scheduling in comparison to "traditional" scheduling, a credit that a student is carrying "under "block" scheduling would be the equivalent of two credits under "traditional" scheduling in determining athletic academic eligibility, except when eligibility is determined by final credits at the end of the school year.
    4. Shade approved for participation in district wrestling. 
    5. District 5 will experiment with the mercy rule in basketball during the regular season.  This will be placed in the basketball packets.
    6. The mother of Jim Ellingsworth, District 3 Chairman, passed away.  Donation will be made to charity in her name.
    7. The committee supports the PIAA investigation of sponsorship of state cheerleading championships.
